Learn how the commentary works
During the full licence test you will be required to give a commentary identifying hazards and your response. We've prepared a simple Hazard Detection and Response Guideline (1 page pdf) for you to see how it works, and how to apply the knowledge during your test. We recommend you download and print this Guideline for reference.
Driver Licence Tests - Class 1 - Car
Restricted test: The restricted driver licence test has been developed to assess the higher skill levels expected of today’s more experienced licence applicants. The 60 minute test includes 45 minutes of drive time. The remaining 15 minutes is used to check the safety of the vehicle prior to driving and to provide feedback. Download and read the Restricted Licence Test Guide (pdf) from the NZTA website.
Full licence test: The full licence test time is 30 minutes which includes 20 minutes of driving. Test applicants will be expected to be able to apply appropriate hazard and detection responses to all assessable tasks without explanation of what is required by the testing officer (known as a commentary, see below). Download and read the Full Licence Test Guide (pdf) from the NZTA website.
Intersection Action Plan
Approaching and driving through intersections can be hazardous. We've developed a Hazard Detection at Intersections Action Plan (1 page pdf) so you can see what's required as you approach an intersection, including hazard detection and mirror checks.

Road Code for Motorcyclists
The official New Zealand road code for motorcyclists is a user-friendly guide to New Zealand’s traffic law and safe driving practices. You will be tested on this information in your theory and practical driving tests. Read the Motorcycle road code introduction and updates.
Practice Drive
ACC and the NZ Transport Agency have created Drive to give learner drivers and their supervisors (coaches) a structured plan for getting two or more hours driving practice a week. More importantly it gives you, the learner, the tools for developing safe driving habits, and your coach the tools for encouraging you.
Computerised theory tests are now available, and the NZ Transport Agency a website with practice questions. Visit Road Code Practice. The practice licence tests can help you become familiar with and prepare for the theory test you will need to pass when applying for a learner licence. These tests are conducted on the NZ Transport Agency's computerised theory testing system.
